Evaluación de la seguridad sísmica de la antigua escuela “Mariano Negrete” en Machachi mediante análisis estructural para determinar su necesidad de reforzamiento

Abstract

La antigua escuela católica “Mariano Negrete”, ubicada en el centro de Machachi, es una edificación construida hace varias décadas sin normas sismo–resistentes ni supervisión técnica. Aunque forma parte del patrimonio de la comunidad, su sistema estructural de muros de mampostería y el desgaste propio del tiempo generan dudas sobre su capacidad para resistir un sismo, más aún si se considera que Ecuador es una zona altamente sísmica. Por esta razón, el objetivo de este trabajo busca analizar el estado estructural del edificio y determinar si cumple con los niveles de seguridad que exige su posible uso futuro como oficina, para hacerlo, se plantea un estudio que incluye el levantamiento de información histórica y constructiva, la modelación del sistema estructural y la aplicación de la normativa vigente, especialmente la NEC-SE-DS 2015. Con estas herramientas se evaluará la respuesta del edificio ante cargas sísmicas y se identificarán los elementos más vulnerables y los posibles mecanismos de falla. Los resultados permitirán conocer el verdadero nivel de seguridad sísmica de la estructura y, en base a ello, se propondrán alternativas de reforzamiento que mejoren su comportamiento sin afectar su valor patrimonial. Este enfoque busca equilibrar la seguridad con la conservación del edificio, ya que se trata de un espacio representativo para Machachi que puede recuperar su funcionalidad si cuenta con la intervención adecuada. The former Catholic school “Mariano Negrete”, located in the center of Machachi, is a building constructed several decades ago without seismic-resistant standards or technical supervision. Although it is part of the community’s heritage, its structural system of masonry walls and the natural deterioration over time raise concerns about its capacity to withstand an earthquake, especially considering that Ecuador is a highly seismic zone. For this reason, the objective of this study is to analyze the structural condition of the building and determine whether it meets the safety levels required for its possible future use as an office. To achieve this, the research proposes a study that includes the collection of historical and construction information, the modeling of the structural system, and the application of current regulations, particularly the NEC-SE-DS 2015. Using these tools, the building’s response to seismic loads will be evaluated, and the most vulnerable elements and possible failure mechanisms will be identified. The results will make it possible to determine the true level of seismic safety of the structure and, based on this assessment, strengthening alternatives will be proposed to improve its performance without affecting its heritage value. This approach seeks to balance safety with the conservation of the building, as it is a representative space for Machachi that can regain its functionality if the appropriate intervention is carried out.
