This thesis examined how well different methods estimate Value at Risk (VaR) in a market as particular as Ecuador's. Using the Ecuador General Adj index (BVQA) and 2,888 real daily prices from 2012 to 2024, five alternatives were evaluated at the 95% and 99% confidence levels: a GARCH (1,1) with Student's t distribution, two quantile-regression LSTM networks (one static and one with walk-forward retraining and volatility features, the LSTM- WF), a hybrid model combining GARCH with LSTM, and, as the non-parametric benchmark, Historical VaR computed over a 500-observation rolling window. Model comparison relied on dynamic backtesting with the Kupiec and Christoffersen tests, the Diebold-Mariano test with HAC variance, and the empirical Expected Shortfall; the whole analysis was implemented in Python and is fully reproducible. Contrary to what the developed-markets literature would suggest, the simplest method performed best: Historical VaR passed both coverage tests at both confidence levels and proved significantly more accurate than the GARCH-t under the Diebold-Mariano test (p = 0.028 at 95% and p = 0.034 at 99%), with the LSTM-WF standing as the second valid option. The explanation lies in the very nature of the BVQA: its low liquidity produces IGARCH dynamics (a + B = 1), ARCH effects that fail to reach significance (p=0.395), and 20.8% of exactly zero returns - conditions under which conditional-volatility models lose their edge…
