| es_ES |
dc.description.abstract | Periodontal diseases are infections associated with pathogenic microorganisms that cause an altered host immune response. Even though bacteria colonization is needed in order to produce them, it’s not enough since it needs other predisposing factors due to the multifactorial etiology of the diseases. It occurs when there is an imbalance between the microbial pathogenesis and the host’s immunological system. Cigarette smoking is a periodontitis risk factor since it affects the vasculature, the humoral and the cellular immune response. Scientific evidence shows that it also affects the cell signaling process and homeostasis, correlating with the disease severity and clinical worsening. This clinical case studies a heavy smoker patient with chronic generalized periodontitis. Treatment included nonsurgical periodontal therapy and removable prosthetics. | es_ES |
